“The electrical characterization of the source and drain extension regions of complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) transistors

is highlighted in the international technology roadmap for semiconductors (ITRS) as a major challenge for future technology nodes. In practice, there is a clear need for techniques which are simultaneously accurate, nondestructive, fast, local, and highly reproducible. The photomodulated optical reflectance (PMOR) technique has shown to be a very promising candidate to solve this need. However, even though this technique has been widely studied on homogeneous bulk material and on as-implanted (i.e., unannealed) doping profiles, the extension toward active

doping profiles requires a detailed investigation (due to the presence of a built-in electric field). In this paper, after performing an in-depth investigation of the optical and transport models involved in a PMOR experiment, we derive an analytical theory to explain the PMOR signal behavior observed on active doping profiles. In the optical model, we show that only the buy Entrectinib electrorefractive Drude and thermorefractive effects are to be considered for red and near-infrared wavelengths on Si. In the transport model, we begin the discussion BAY 73-4506 manufacturer with the study of homogeneous Si substrates. We show that, due to the high carrier

injection induced by the lasers, the only important effects are, for the free carriers, the Auger recombinations, the (ambipolar) diffusion and the bandgap narrowing-induced quasidrift; the thermoelectric effects being negligible. Based on the results on homogeneous substrates and on the assumption that the quasi-Fermi levels are flat through the space-charge region, we derive an analytical formula for PMOR signals on active doping profiles. We discuss this formula based on experimental PMOR data measured on active doping profiles with a simple boxlike shape. This formula proves to be in good qualitative agreement with the experimental data both when the power of the pump laser is varied (power curves) and when the distance between the lasers is changed (offset curves). We also show that, for the formula to be quantitative, a very good knowledge of the bandgap profile throughout the sample would be required. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.

Ag nanoparticles were observed to form hexagonal tessellation over the curved Selleckchem eFT508 silica surface. The distribution of nanoparticles over silica spheres is explained in view of surface energy minimization by Euler’s characteristic for best coverage. The oblique angle of Ag vapor flux with respect to the substrate normal during growth was observed to be the control parameter in formation

of SiOx-Ag core-shell nanostructures. Usually, OAD has been used to grow columnar nanostructures by exploiting the shadowing effect of adatoms during deposition but the application in surface modification at nanoscale by controlling the competing effect of shadowing and surface diffusion is the novelty in this work. “The focus of this work is the study of the thermal AZD4547 aging of high-performance fibers used in the making of fire protective garments. Accelerated thermal aging tests were carried out on fabric samples made up of a blend of Kevlar (R) (poly p-phenylene terephthalamide) and PBI (poly benzimidazole) staple fibers, as well as on yarns pulled from this fabric, by means of exposure to elevated temperatures, comprised between 190 degrees C and 320 degrees C. All samples underwent loss of breaking force retention. The material thermal life, defined as the time required for the fibers to attain a 50% reduction of the original breaking force, ranged between a dozen of days at the lowest exposure temperature, to less than an hour at the highest. Breaking force data were fitted using the Arrhenius model following two different approaches, namely the extrapolated thermal life value and the shift factors yielded by the time-temperature superposition(TTS).

“The acoustic phonon transport in a four-channel quantum structure is investigated by use of

the scattering matrix method. It is found that different acoustic phonon modes transport selectively into different channels, standing waves can be formed owning to acoustic phonons interfering with each other in the quantum structure, the transmission coefficients of acoustic phonon through different channels depend sensitively on the parameters of the structure, and the channels all exhibit the noninteger quantized thermal conductance at very low temperatures due to the splitting of the quantum structure. The structure may be used as a split device for acoustic phonon modes and controlling the acoustic phonon transport.”

“Recently, we have reported the experimental results of DNA stretching by flow field in three microchannels (C. H. Lee and C. C. Hsieh, Biomicrofluidics 7(1), 014109 (2013)) designed specifically for the purpose of preconditioning DNA conformation for easier stretching. The experimental results do not only demonstrate the superiority of the new devices but also provides detailed observation of DNA behavior in complex flow field that was not available before. In this study, we use Brownian dynamics-finite Poziotinib element method (BD-FEM)

to simulate DNA behavior in these microchannels, and compare the results against the experiments. Although the hydrodynamic interaction (HI) between DNA segments and between DNA and the device boundaries was not included in the simulations, the simulation results are in fairly good agreement with the experimental data from either the aspect of the single molecule behavior or from the aspect of ensemble averaged properties. The discrepancy between the simulation and the experimental results can be explained by the neglect of HI effect in the simulations. Considering the huge savings on the computational cost from neglecting HI, we conclude that BD-FEM can be used as an efficient and economic designing tool for developing new microfluidic device for DNA manipulation. However, it has not been clarified whether limaprost affects pain sensation associated with radiculopathy due to lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of oral limaprost with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for radiculopathy.

We performed a multicenter prospective randomized trial. Patients with LSS who had radicular-type

neurologic intermittent claudication assessed based on a self-reported diagnostic support tool were randomized into three treatment groups. Limaprost, NSAIDs, or limaprost plus NSAIDs were administered orally for 6 weeks. Leg pain, low back pain (LBP) and the associated symptoms were assessed by a numerical rating scale (NRS) both at rest and on movement as well as the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RDQ) and Short Form (SF)-36.

Sixty-one patients were enrolled in the study. Each treatment finally reduced radicular check details pain, and the improvement was prominent in a combination treatment. There were no significant differences in radicular pain among three groups at final follow-up. LBP was not influenced by Thiazovivin limaprost, and a significant reduction of LBP and RDQ was confirmed in a combination treatment compared with limaprost. Physical function of the SF-36 subscales after a combination

treatment showed a marked alleviation compared with NSAIDs.

These obtained findings suggest that the effects of limaprost seem to be limited to radicular pain, not for LBP. Overall, a combination treatment might be more effective in the management of radiculopathy induced by LSS than SNS-032 manufacturer monotherapy with either agent.”

Main Outcome Measures: Success rate, defined as a reduction of perforation size of 50% or more to determine relative changes of the perforation size; effect of initial size and location of TM perforation on success rate; and air and bone conduction thresholds to determine air-bone gap measured before treatment.

Results: Randomization

made matching pretreatment perforation size of the 2 study groups impossible, and the initial rate perforation/TM was significantly smaller in the PDGF group. No difference between the 2 groups was found for perforation/TM less than 10%. However, success rate did not differ significantly between the 2 groups (power = 0.8), and the effect of PDGF Entinostat sds was found to be small (-2%; standard deviation, +/- 49%). Initial size and position of the TM perforation were not significant factors determining success. Mean air-bone gap for the frequencies of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz was 22.5 dB.

“Health degradation modifies Trp metabolism through induction of Trp catabolism. This could limit the amount of Trp available for growth. The aims of the present experiment were to investigate the effects of a low grade inflammation and dietary Trp on growth and Trp metabolism. Eighty weaned pigs were assigned to 4 experimental treatments according to a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement: LY2835219 ic50 2 sanitary statuses x 2 dietary Trp contents. The Trp

content was deficient (low-Trp: 2.4 and 1.9 g of Trp/kg of the phase I and phase II diets, respectively) or adequate (high-Trp: 2.9 and 2.4 g of Trp/kg of the phase I and phase II diets, respectively). A low grade inflammatory response was induced by housing pigs in unsanitary environment, whereas control pigs were housed in good sanitary conditions. Pigs were not fed ad libitum to avoid feed refusals. Growth performance was calculated 3, 5, and 7 wk after weaning. Blood was sampled 12, 33, and 47 d after weaning for the determination of plasma concentrations

of Trp and related metabolites, kynurenine and pyridoxal-5-phosphate. The interaction between sanitary status and dietary Trp was not statistically significant in all measured criteria. Pigs kept in poor sanitary conditions grew slower (P < 0.001) during the entire experimental period and had greater Ispinesib in vivo plasma concentrations of haptoglobin (P < 0.001) than pigs housed in good sanitary conditions. Pigs housed in poor sanitary conditions had also decreased Trp plasma concentrations (P < 0.001), but plasma kynurenine concentrations were not affected. Our results indicated that a moderate inflammatory response was obtained by degrading the sanitary quality of environment. Additionally, poor sanitary conditions modified Trp metabolism, indicating that the amount of Trp available for growth and other metabolic functions might be reduced.”
“MgZnO alloys are potentially important semiconductors for UV optoelectronics and other applications. Since device heterostructures are under significant strain, it is important to determine the elastic properties of these materials,

in the bulk and nanoscale. In this work, the equations of state were obtained for ZnO and Mg(x)Zn(1-x)O alloys under hydrostatic pressure, PLX3397 chemical structure using x-ray diffraction. The equations of state were found to be insensitive to Mg content up to x = 0.2. The pressure dependence of the c/a ratio also did not depend on Mg content, within experimental uncertainty. Combining these results with previous ultrasonic measurements, the following elastic constants were determined to be valid for wurtzite Mg(x)Zn(1-x)O (x <= 0.2): C(11) = 207 GPa, C(12) = 118 GPa, C(33) = 210 GPa, and C(13) = 106 GPa. These elastic constants yield a bulk modulus of 143 GPa and c/a slope of -3 x 10(-4)GPa(-1). Nanocrystals showed the same bulk moduli as their bulk counterparts.

“Background: Alkylresorcinols are phenolic compounds that are present almost exclusively in rye and wheat fiber. Alkylresorcinols are absorbed and thereafter metabolized to 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHBA) and 3-(3,5-dihydroxyphenyl)-1-propanoic acid (DHPPA), which have been detected in human urine and plasma.

Objective: The objective was to determine the plasma pharmacokinetics of DHBA and DHPPA in human subjects to estimate whether they show potential as biomarkers for whole-grain rye and/or wheat intake.

Design: Fifteen human volunteers followed a low-alkylresorcinol diet for 2 d before ingesting

a single dose of high-fiber rye bread containing 45 mg alkylresorcinols. Plasma samples were collected for 25 h, and the alkylresorcinol metabolites were quantified by HPLC with coulometric electrode array detection.

Results: Maximum concentrations were reached at approximate to 6 h for both metabolites, although interindividual variation was found. The half-life was LB-100 mouse significantly (P < 0.0002) longer for DHPPA(16.3 h) than for DHBA (10.1 h). No significant differences were discovered between women and men in the half-life of each metabolite, which, from a pharmacokinetic point of view, is the most important parameter. The area under the curve differed significantly between DHBA and DHPPA (P < 0.0001) and between women and men (P = 0.03 for DHBA and P = 0.01 for DHPPA). However, when corrected for body weight, the difference between sexes was no longer significant.

Conclusions: Our results suggest that DHBA and DHPPA are both good candidate biomarkers for whole-grain rye and/or wheat intake; however, DHPPA is the better indicator because of its longer half-life. This could provide a practical tool when investigating the association between diet and diseases. Am J Clin Nutr 2009; 90: 1167-71.”

“Poly(lactide) (PLA) and its copolymers can be made from naturally occurring materials. They are ideal candidates as sustainable materials

to replace the petroleum based polymers. However, these polymers often are brittle so toughening is needed. One of the most effective toughening methods is to reactive blend brittle polymers with materials having very different rigidity. This approach requires that the two materials chemically bond with each other at the interface to compatibilize the blends. Thus, to design and make reactive systems is a key to the success of reactive blending. In this article,

we studied toughening poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) with a rubbery material poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC). We observed that PTMC spontaneously reacted with PLGA during melt blending. The reaction produced PLGA-co-PTMC copolymers that stayed at the PLGA/PTMC interface. Those copolymers not only helped to create a stable blend microstructure at a length scale of 100 rim but also promoted the bonding between the PLGA and PTMC domains. It is interesting that the reaction did not need a catalyst or initiator. We speculated that this reaction between

BIBF 1120 PLGA and PTMC was a transesterification reaction. This reaction is easy to achieve and is expected to broaden the property range of the PLGA and other degradable polyesters, enabling them to replace certain types of petroleum based polymers. Knock-down resistance due to a point mutation in the voltage gate

Knock-down resistance due to a point mutation in the voltage gated sodium channel at L1014 residue (kdr) is a common mechanism of resistance to DDT and pyrethroids.

The selection of this resistance may pose a serious threat to the success of the pyrethroid-impregnated bed net programme. This study reports the presence of kdr mutation (L1014F) in a field population of An. culicifacies s.l. and three new PCR-based methods for kdr genotyping.

Methods: The IIS4-IIS5 linker to IIS6 segments of the para type voltage gated sodium channel gene of DDT and pyrethroid resistant An. culicifacies s.l. population BMS202 clinical trial from the Surat district of India was sequenced. This revealed the presence of an A-to-T substitution at position 1014 leading to a leucine-phenylalanine mutation (L1014F) in a few individuals. Three molecular methods viz. Allele Specific PCR (AS-PCR), an Amplification Refractory Mutation System NVP-HSP990 chemical structure (ARMS) and Primer Introduced Restriction Analysis-PCR (PIRA-PCR) were developed and tested for kdr genotyping. The specificity of the three assays was validated following DNA sequencing of the samples genotyped.

Results: The genotyping of this An. culicifacies s.l. population by the three PCR based assays provided consistent result and were in agreement with DNA sequencing

result. A low frequency of the kdr allele mostly in heterozygous condition was observed in the resistant population. Frequencies of the different genotypes were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.

Conclusion: The Leu-Phe mutation, which generates MDV3100 the kdr phenotype in many insects, was detected in a pyrethroid and DDT resistant An. culicifacies s.l. population. Three PCR-based methods were developed for kdr genotyping. All the three assays were specific. The ARMS method

was refractory to non-specific amplification in non-stringent amplification conditions. The PIRA-PCR assay is able to detect both the codons for the phenylalanine mutation at kdr locus, i.e., TTT and TTC, in a single assay, although the latter codon was not found in the population genotyped.”

in blue emitting organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) based on 9,10-bis (2-naphthyl)-2-t-butyl anthracene (TBADN) fluorescent emitter is investigated using a number of techniques, including delayed electroluminescence measurements. The studies reveal that electrical aging is associated with an increasing concentration of an intermolecular species with a weak characteristic luminescence at around 535 nm. This species is capable of charge trapping, this website and thus plays a role as an electron-hole recombination center with prolonged electrical driving. Weak green luminescence from this species leads to an increased green/blue emission ratio, and causes the color purity loss in aged devices.
